You wouldn’t be alone if you found it hard to believe that London Bridge, now famous for the Shard and Borough Market has quite the macabre past. Once well known for its debaucherous theatres, inns and illicit encounters with ladies of the night, there are still some remnants of its clandestine past dotted throughout. If you want to experience a piece of this history for yourself, head down to Cross Bones Graveyard; the resting place of paupers and prostitutes alike. It is definitely a site to behold with trinkets and colourful ribbons strewn across the gates. A stark contrast to the shiny skyscraper of the Shard that can be seen in the distance.
The intertwining theme of old and new can be seen constantly as you walk around this wonderfully historic area. It is partly due to this that London Bridge has become a hugely desirable area to live. With period homes amongst new build developments and warehouse conversions there is a style to suit everyone.
In today’s world of technology and tablets, culture and character are fast becoming scarce and here you have that in abundance. From Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre to Tate Modern, with the Young Vic and the Old Vic you can be sure to find your culture fix and the continuing theme of old meets new.
If food is more your thing then the celebrated Borough Market is not the only must visit in London Bridge. Flat Iron Square, The Vinegar Yard and the Menier Chocolate Factory are all fabulous foodie hotspots. Brindisa for tapas, Shellsheekers for seafood, Konditor and Cook for those with a sweet tooth and Roast Restaurant for, well roasts… should all be checked out too! If you’re looking for something more fancy for a special occasion then heading up to the Shard for some of the most spectacular views in Hutong, Oblix or Aqua Shard.
Transport is key for this area. London Bridge station itself is so well connected with a large overground service and both the Bakerloo and Jubilee tube lines. If you prefer being able to walk to work then look no further if you’re based in the city… A short walk across the bridge and you’ll find yourself in Monument!
If you’re looking for culture, accessibility and a variety of architecture, then London Bridge is where you want to be. Call us today and we will put you in touch with a dedicated expert in the area that will help you uncover even more of the gems that this area has to offer.
