The green jewel of the South East. With the meander of the river Thames as it bends down to Greenwich the naval importance of Greenwich from times past is still immediately noticeable with the magnificence of the Royal Naval College and the Maritime Museum – once home to many of the most distinguished officers of the Royal Navy. If you arrive via the Thames clipper the view is even more impressive. Near the college sits one of the largest ‘pubs’ in Britain, aptly named The Trafalgar Tavern, after Lord Nelsons win at the battle of Trafalgar. A rather beautifully ornate and highly recommended restaurant and bar, this is a great place on the river to watch the water pass-by.
Steeped in history Greenwich has many offerings; Regency housing, great restaurants, quirky markets, magnificent museums and of-course, Greenwich Park. This huge open park land is also home to the creation of modern-day timekeeping; at the Greenwich Observatory notably for the invention of GMT – indeed, you can step across the line to straddle both time zones.
Across from the Greenwich Park is Blackheath, perhaps the lesser known delight of the two. Blackheath stretches across the very top of south east London from Greenwich Park into the cosmopolitan, pretty village. It is often a bit breezy across the Heath, so this has become a favourite spot for kite flyers, wind-skateboarders and dogs. Having always been a great meeting point for crowds – Wat Tyler’s revolting peasants gathered here in 1381, for example. Nowadays it’s home to fun fairs, a music festival, lots of weekend football pitches and the start of the London Marathon.
There is an exciting urban myth that Blackheath was named that way because it was a plague pit in medieval times! All wrong, sadly – it was probably called Blackheath after the colour of the soil, which is nowhere near as exciting. Today it’s a busy hub of café-culture and home to an excellent Sunday Farmer’s Market, where you can find lots of lovely locally grown vegetables to go with your Sunday roast.
